6 Nights off the Beaten Track
A six-night guided self-drive journey through Oman’s incredible landscapes, from mountains and fossil reefs to remote islands and sweeping desert dunes.
Your group will be accompanied by Marina, aka The Desert Diva, an expert on the Sultanate who has visited countless times since her first trip in 2007. With her deep knowledge of Oman’s landscapes, history, and culture, Marina will guide you alongside an experienced Omani guide, ensuring an unforgettable adventure.
We offer car hire packages, but you are also welcome to bring your own 4×4 or hire a vehicle independently—just make sure it is insured for off-road track driving.

Tour Itinerary
Begin your adventure by revving up your 4×4 hire car and joining Marina and a knowledgeable local guide. Together, venture far beyond the usual tourist routes and immersing yourself in Oman’s spectacular natural wonders on our Wild Wonders of Oman tour.
Day/Night 1
Overnight At Nizwa
Arrive in the historic city of Nizwa, known for its striking fort and bustling souq.
For those arriving by 2:30 PM, there is an optional tour to Nizwa and Birkat Al Mouz, a charming village with lush date plantations and ancient falaj irrigation channels.
Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the 4* Antique Inn
Day/Night 2
Nizwa to Al Huqf
Drive towards Al Huqf, transitioning from tarmac to approximately 60 kilometres of off-road terrain.
Al Huqf is a fascinating geological area, home to fossil reefs and dramatic rock formations that reveal over 700 million years of Earth’s history.
Set up camp under the pristine dark skies—perfect for stargazing.
Enjoy a campfire and a barbecue in this ancient landscape.
Day/Night 3
Al Huqf to Masairah
After an early morning off-road drive of around 25 kilometres, head to Shannah Port to catch the ferry to Masirah Island, a peaceful and remote paradise.
Upon arrival, check in to the Orjen Hotel, situated with lovely harbour views, and then head over to the east of the island to observe vultures, and possibly turtles.
Enjoy a BBQ by the sea, if we are lucky, with bioluminescent waves, and a canopy of stars.
Day/Night 4
Explore Masairah
Spend the day discovering Masirah Island’s hidden tracks and coastal scenery.
Watch local fishermen unload their catch and see if we can spot dolphins playing in the waves.
The island is home to camels, donkeys, and Egyptian vultures, offering fantastic wildlife spotting.
In the evening, stay once again at the Orjan Hotel by the harbour and have dinner at the famous Yemeni Fish Restaurant.
Day/Night 5
Sharqiyah Sands
Start the morning with breakfast at a roadside café, watching Masirah come to life for the day.
Take the ferry back to the mainland and, depending on the tides, drive along the beach at Ras Ruways before heading into the desert.
Camp overnight among the dunes, enjoying the peace and beauty of Oman’s vast wilderness.
Day/Night 6
Return to Muscat
Continuing our breathtaking desert drive, we eventually merge onto the road and begin our journey back to Muscat. Along the way, we’ll traverse the stunning new mountain road and enjoy a scenic wet wadi drive. Our journey concludes at the Crowne Plaza OCEC, and we’ll share a final Omani dinner at Rozna Restaurant, reminiscing about our incredible adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Still wondering whether Wild Wonders of Oman is right for you? Here are some of the practical questions people often ask before joining one of my guided self-drive adventures.
Who is Wild Wonders of Oman suitable for?
This journey suits:
-
Couples and friends seeking meaningful adventure
-
Confident travellers aged 40+ who value comfort and authenticity
-
Nature lovers, photographers, and curious minds
-
Anyone who prefers stories over souvenirs
It’s deliberately small, carefully paced, and led by people who know Oman not just as a destination — but as a place with depth, history, and soul.
We no longer accept children under 12 years on our small group tours; however if you can assemble 6 adult friends with kids for a private tour, we’d love to include younger adventurers.
Do I need off-road driving experience?
There is no need to have prior offroad driving experience – we will coach you through any tricky terrain (You will be in good hands – Marina worked on the Dakar Rally as an offroad coach for their VIP experience.)
What type of vehicle do I need?
We offer packages with Mitsubishi Montero Sport or Toyota Fortuners. Alternatively you can take along your own 4×4 or hire one from another car hire firm. If we do not provide the car, it is essential that your car has insurance for offroad driving (many hire companies exclude this). Not all 4 wheel drives are made equal – AWD/4WD are not suitable for the terrain -if you tell us the make, model and year of your car, we will let you know.
Can I join as a passenger?
This trip is primarily an on/offroad driving experience, however, sometimes our guide will be able to take you for an additional charge – please contact us to discuss.
How Adventurous is the route?
Highly experienced offroaders will find the route easy, and for those without experience we will coach you through any difficult terrain – getting stuck is all part of the fun! Much of the route is over 150kms from large towns, and we often go a few days without seeing other tourists – the remoteness is a big part of the adventure!
What are camping nights like?
We will have one night in a remote wadi; another in the desert. The skies are dark, stars are many, and campfire conversations are delightful! There is time to have a walk around, get to know the plants and wildlife better, before settling down in front of the campfire for a hearty supper.
Note – we are wild camping, so washrooms are “al fresco” – ie, behind that dune over there! You will never be more than 24 hours away from a proper toilet, and with camping planned for inconsecutive nights, after one night in the desert, the next one will be in a hotel!
What meals are included?
From the welcome lunch/picnic on day one, through to the final breakfast on day seven, three main meals a day are included – breakfast, lunch and dinner. Water, tea and instant coffee are included too.
Can you cater for gluten free or other dietary needs?
Yes we can. Marina is coeliac, so has been gluten free for almost 10 years, and plans the menu round gluten free food. We have in the past had vegetarians and vegans on this tour – note that in the most remote areas, options are limited, but we always find something for our guests to eat!
Is Oman safe for this kind of trip?
Absolutely! Marina has explored and driven solo for many years in Oman, and always felt safe. Even though we are going miles off the beaten track, Omanis are delighted to see us and welcome us to their villages. Everyone is friendly and helpful, and by doing a tour like this, you can discover just how wonderful Omanis are!
What sort of support is available if something goes wrong?
We have a network of Omani contacts and businesses across the country who are only a phonecall away – and Marina has a satphone if we are out of a GSM area. There is a network of small clinics across Oman should anyone need medical treatment for cuts, bites, infections etc.
What should I pack?
Comfortable, modest clothing, hiking sandals or trainers (closed in shoes essential for camping nights!)
Hat and sunglasses
Sunscreen and meds
Your phone/camera/action cam and charging leads
Camping gear if you are not opting for the car hire package (tent/airbeds/sleeping bags included in the car hire package)
Your sense of adventure
When is the tour confirmed to run?
The tour is confirmed once we have 6 adults signed up with deposit paid, or 60 days before the tour starts, whichever is the sooner.
How many people are in the group?
We place a limit of 12 adults on each tour; this usually works out at a maximum 7 guest cars.
Ready to Uncover Your Arabia?
Spaces are genuinely limited — we run one convoy per date with a maximum of 12 adults. If this sounds like your kind of adventure, schedule a free 30-minute Zoom call with Marina, or reach out by phone/WhatsApp.
This itinerary can be tailored to your needs to ensure a personalized and unique travel experience
Consider these customizable options to enhance your experience:
- Have us book flights and hotels at the start and end of your stay
- Extend the tour to include even more incredible terrain
