Oman 4-Day, 3-Night Adventure

Make the Most of the UAE National Day Holidays

Four days.

Three nights.

Two wild camps.

One unforgettable adventure.

4x4 driving through the mountain and wadi landscapes of Oman

2–5 December 2026 Desert, Mountains, Wadis and Culture

Escape the city during the UAE National Day holiday and join a four-day guided self-drive adventure through the spectacular landscapes of northern Oman.

This small-group Oman tour takes you far beyond the usual tourist routes, with off-road driving through peaceful wadis, a crossing of the Hajar Mountains, ancient petroglyphs, traditional villages and remote landscapes that many visitors never experience.

The three-night itinerary includes one night in a comfortable hotel and two nights wild camping in Oman, with barbecue dinners, star-filled skies and mornings surrounded by nature.

Your convoy will be led by Marina, also known as The Desert Diva, an Oman travel specialist who has explored the Sultanate extensively since her first visit in 2007. Marina will guide the group throughout the journey, share her knowledge of Oman's landscapes, history and culture, and provide support during the off-road sections.

Guests will need a suitable 4x4 vehicle with low-range gearing (4-Low), insured for travel in Oman and specifically covered for off-road driving. You may bring your own 4x4 or hire a suitable vehicle independently.

This is a special one-off small-group departure, taking place from 2–5 December 2026 to make the most of the UAE National Day holidays. With a maximum of eight guest vehicles, places are strictly limited, and we've already received enquiries.

Would you prefer to travel on different dates? This adventure is also available as a private guided tour for families, friends or small groups, with dates arranged to suit you.

TOUR ITINERARY

Four days of exploration, discovery and adventure. From desert tracks and traditional villages to dramatic mountain scenery, ancient history and refreshing wadis, every day offers something different. Join Marina and your fellow adventurers as we discover some of northern Oman's most remarkable landscapes.

Off-road adventure through the landscapes of Oman
DAY 1 | WEDNESDAY 2 DECEMBER

Into the Desert

Our adventure begins at 1pm on the outskirts of Buraimi, where we'll meet our fellow travellers before heading into the desert. We'll introduce everyone to the convoy and make sure we're ready for our first afternoon of exploration.

Our first off-road drive is relatively gentle, giving everyone the opportunity to settle into convoy driving and get comfortable with the terrain. We'll travel through peaceful desert and wadi landscapes, taking time to enjoy the scenery and look out for wildlife.

By late afternoon, we'll find our campsite, set up our tents and get the barbecue going. As the sun sets and the desert becomes quiet, we'll enjoy our first evening together under the stars. Away from the bright city lights, it's a lovely opportunity to relax, get to know our fellow adventurers and appreciate the stillness of the desert.

Meals: BBQ dinner
Overnight: Desert camping
Sunset over an ancient fort near Ibri in Oman
DAY 2 | THURSDAY 3 DECEMBER

Desert Discoveries and Omani Heritage

Wake up in the desert, enjoy breakfast at camp and continue exploring the surrounding landscape. There's something rather special about a desert morning, when the light is soft, the air is fresh and the scenery looks quite different from the evening before.

Around lunchtime, we'll visit Falaj Saraa, where we'll enjoy lunch and discover more about the area's traditional way of life and its remarkable irrigation heritage. Oman's ancient falaj systems have played an important role in supporting communities and agriculture in this challenging environment.

Later we'll head towards Ibri, with the possibility of an additional scenic detour if local conditions allow. As we travel, we'll see how the landscapes change and how settlements have developed around sources of water.

As the afternoon draws to a close, we'll explore the historic village of Al Araqi before checking into our hotel. Here we'll have the opportunity to discover something of Oman's past through its traditional buildings and village setting. In the evening, we'll head out together for dinner at a local Arabic restaurant.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Hotel in Ibri
Exploring the mountain landscapes of Oman
DAY 3 | FRIDAY 4 DECEMBER

Mountain Trails, Ancient Rock Art and Wadi Camping

After breakfast at the hotel, we'll head into the Hajar Mountains for a day of dramatic scenery, fascinating geology and off-road exploration. The mountains offer a striking contrast to the open desert, with rugged peaks, steep-sided valleys and impressive rock formations.

Along the way, we'll visit ancient petroglyphs, rock carvings left by people who lived in this region long before modern roads and cities existed. These remarkable reminders of the past offer a glimpse into the lives and surroundings of earlier generations.

We'll explore the spectacular landscapes around Wadi Sahtan, discovering the geological features of the valleys and mountains, including evidence of Oman's ancient marine environments. Fossils and rock formations tell a fascinating story of how this landscape has changed over millions of years.

By late afternoon, we'll establish our second campsite in a wadi, surrounded by mountains rather than the desert of our first night. Another barbecue and a relaxing evening await, with plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and share stories of the day's discoveries.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and BBQ dinner
Overnight: Wadi camping
View of the natural water-filled Hawqayn Trenches in Oman
DAY 4 | SATURDAY 5 DECEMBER

Wadi Driving and the Hawqayn Trenches

Our final day brings another completely different side of Oman. After breakfast at camp, we'll pack up and make our way towards Al Hoqain, an area known for its remarkable water-carved landscapes.

We'll drive through the wadi wherever conditions permit, exploring the fascinating landscape shaped by water over countless years. The combination of rock formations, pools and flowing water creates a wonderful contrast to the drier landscapes we've explored earlier in the trip.

One of the highlights is the opportunity to swim in the natural water-filled rock trenches, subject to suitable conditions and safety requirements. These unusual formations make a memorable final stop, with opportunities for photographs and, for those who wish, a refreshing swim.

After a light snack lunch, we'll say our goodbyes at approximately 1pm, close to the Al Batinah Expressway, which provides a convenient route back towards Dubai. We'll head home with plenty of photographs, new friendships and memories of four very different days exploring Oman.

Meals: Breakfast and snack lunch
Finish: Hawqayn, approximately 1pm
A note about our itinerary: Off-road routes, campsite locations and activities may change according to weather, wadi water levels and road conditions. Safety always comes first, and we will never take unnecessary risks.

From the UAE Border to Oman's Wild Interior

This four-day UAE National Day self-drive adventure explores a wonderfully varied corner of northern Oman, combining peaceful wadis, mountain tracks, ancient petroglyphs and remote off-road routes.

The journey includes approximately 80 kilometres of off-road and track driving, with a longer detour possible if the Safa Lakes are accessible. Previous off-road experience is not essential, but you must bring a suitable 4x4 with low-range gearing and appropriate off-road insurance. Marina is an experienced off-road coach and will guide you through the terrain, convoy procedures and any more challenging sections.

Along the way, you will enjoy two nights of wild camping, cross the Hajar Mountains, explore Wadi Sahtan and finish among the rock pools and natural trenches of Wadi Hoqain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still wondering whether Wild Wonders of Oman is right for you? Here are some of the practical questions people often ask before joining one of my guided self-drive adventures.

Who is Wild Wonders of Oman suitable for?

This journey suits:

  • Couples and friends seeking meaningful adventure

  • Confident travellers aged 40+ who value comfort and authenticity

  • Families keen to disconnect from the modern world for a few days
  • Nature lovers, photographers, and curious minds

  • Anyone who prefers stories over souvenirs

It’s deliberately small, carefully paced, and led by people who know Oman not just as a destination — but as a place with depth, history, and soul.

Do I need off-road driving experience?

There is no need to have prior offroad driving experience – we will coach you through any tricky terrain (You will be in good hands – Marina worked on the Dakar Rally as an offroad coach for their VIP experience.)

What type of vehicle do I need?

We offer packages with Mitsubishi Montero Sport or Toyota Fortuners.  Alternatively you can take along your own 4×4 or hire one from another car hire firm.  If we do not provide the car, it is essential that your car has insurance for offroad driving (many hire companies exclude this).  Not all 4 wheel drives are made equal – AWD/4WD are not suitable for the terrain -if you tell us the make, model and year of  your car, we will let you know.

Can I join as a passenger?

This trip is primarily an on/offroad driving experience, however, sometimes our guide will be able to take you for an additional charge – please contact us to discuss.

How Adventurous is the route?

Highly experienced offroaders will find the route easy, and for those without experience we will coach you through any difficult terrain – getting stuck is all part of the fun!  Much of the route is over 150kms from large towns, and we often go a few days without seeing other tourists – the remoteness is a big part of the adventure!

What are camping nights like?

We will have one night in a remote wadi; another in the desert.  The skies are dark, stars are many, and campfire conversations are delightful!  There is time to have a walk around, get to know the plants and wildlife better, before settling down in front of the campfire for a hearty supper.

Note – we are wild camping, so washrooms are “al fresco” – ie, behind that dune over there!  You will never be more than 24 hours away from a proper toilet, and with camping planned for inconsecutive nights, after one night in the desert, the next one will be in a hotel!

What meals are included?

From the welcome lunch/picnic on day one, through to the final breakfast on day seven, three main meals a day are included – breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Water, tea and instant coffee are included too.

Can you cater for gluten free or other dietary needs?

Yes we can.  Marina is coeliac, so has been gluten free for almost 10 years, and plans the menu round gluten free food.  We have in the past had vegetarians and vegans on this tour – note that in the most remote areas, options are limited, but we always find something for our guests to eat!

Is Oman safe for this kind of trip?

Absolutely!  Marina has explored and driven solo for many years in Oman, and always felt safe. Even though we are going miles off the beaten track, Omanis are delighted to see us and welcome us to their villages.  Everyone is friendly and helpful, and by doing a tour like this, you can discover just how wonderful Omanis are!

What sort of support is available if something goes wrong?

We have a network of Omani contacts and businesses across the country who are only a phonecall away – and Marina has a satphone if we are out of a GSM area.  There is a network of small clinics across Oman should anyone need medical treatment for cuts, bites, infections etc.

What should I pack?

Comfortable, modest clothing, hiking sandals or trainers (closed in shoes essential for camping nights!)

Hat and sunglasses

Sunscreen and meds

Your phone/camera/action cam and charging leads

Camping gear if you are not opting for the car hire package (tent/airbeds/sleeping bags included in the car hire package)

Your sense of adventure

When is the tour confirmed to run?

The tour is confirmed once we have 6 adults signed up with deposit paid, or 60 days before the tour starts, whichever is the sooner.

How many people are in the group?

We place a limit of 12 adults on each tour; this usually works out at a maximum 7 guest cars.

Can I book this as a private tour?

Yes you can; there is a minimum charge for 6 adults, and kids aged 4 and up are welcome (and should really enjoy) this tour!  Read more here.

We also cover most of this itinerary on our Nomad Navigator Teambuilding Events – read more here.

Ready to Uncover Your Arabia?

Spaces are genuinely limited — we run one convoy per date with a maximum of 12 adults. If this sounds like your kind of adventure, schedule a free 30-minute Zoom call with Marina, or reach out by phone/WhatsApp.

This itinerary can be tailored to your needs to ensure a personalized and unique travel experience

  • Extend the tour to include even more incredible terrain
