Welcome to the Desert Diva’s Oman Blog Series, where I share some of the thousands of pictures I have taken over my many years of travelling in the Arabian Peninsula.
Omani Mountain Roads – New Routes
To a Scot, it is a huge country, covering 309,500 km2, compared to my rather tiny homeland of 78,770 km2. Like my own country, there are mountains that make travelling from A to B much more difficult. While Scotland skirts its mountains, Oman blasts through them! This picture was taken heading northwards on the Hasik-Shuwaymia section of the Salalah-Muscat Coastal Road. It significantly shortens the distance that you had to drive to reach coastal towns and villages.

Oman has its fair share of mountains, and an ambitious road-building program means you can travel with ease through many of the ranges. That’s not true of all roads in the mountain ranges. Traditional tracks have been improved over the years, but you’re not driving on tarmac and there’s often little space for two vehicles to pass.
