A Solo Female Traveller in the Arabian Peninsula
If you ever find yourself deep in the Rub Al Khali—the Empty Quarter—you might just spot me: a Scottish woman behind the wheel of a 4×4, tyres deflated, GPS calibrated, and ready to explore the largest sand desert in the world. I’ve spent more than 15 years travelling through the Arabian Peninsula, and though I’m now based in Scotland, a large part of my heart still belongs to the sands of Arabia.
Feeling Safe and Respected
When I first ventured into the desert alone, friends back home worried. “Is it safe?” they’d ask, picturing danger behind every dune. Yet the truth is quite the opposite.
In the UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, I have always felt safer than in many cities in Europe. There’s a quiet sense of order here—visible security, respectful communities, and laws that protect both residents and visitors.
The presence of police and CCTV doesn’t unsettle me; it reassures me. Crime is rare, and as long as you respect local customs and laws, these are some of the safest countries in the world for women travellers.
Kindness and Curiosity
I’ve never felt threatened or belittled as a woman travelling alone. What I have felt, time and again, is kindness, curiosity, and respect. The people of Arabia are genuinely warm and welcoming, especially when they see that you’ve made an effort to understand their culture.
Sometimes that means wearing a long, flowing Bedu dress when I’m driving through the desert—partly because it’s comfortable, but mostly because it’s a small gesture of respect that opens doors and hearts.
You Don’t Need to Go Off-Road to See the Real Arabia
Although I love exploring remote desert tracks, you don’t need to drive off-road to experience the magic of the Middle East. The road networks in Oman, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia are excellent, often leading right to the edge of the desert or to fascinating historical and cultural sites.
Well-maintained highways link coastal towns, mountain passes, oases, and ancient forts, making it easy for solo travellers to explore at their own pace. There’s also public transport in all three countries—buses, taxis, and even trains in parts of Saudi Arabia—but if you’re able to drive, it gives you a greater sense of independence and the chance to engage with local people and everyday life.
Stopping at a roadside café for Arabic coffee or chatting to a shopkeeper often leads to wonderful cultural exchanges and lasting memories.
Freedom and Connection
Driving solo through these lands is freedom itself. Every detour leads to discovery—wadis filled with date palms, fossil beds, forts, and dunes that ripple like silk in the sunset. Oman’s dramatic mountain tracks and coastal drives are breathtaking, while Saudi Arabia constantly surprises with its vastness, generosity, and youthful energy.
Many nights, I choose to wild camp—no formal campsites, no fences, just me, my tent, and the stars. These are the moments I feel most alive. I often think of the Bedu, who once navigated these same landscapes guided only by starlight, and I give silent thanks for my 4×4 and GPS. At dawn, I might wake to birdsong echoing through a wadi or to the first rays painting the dunes in shades of gold and rose.
Arabia Is Safe, Welcoming, and Full of Wonder
Being a solo woman in Arabia isn’t about isolation. It’s about independence within a community that quietly looks out for you. I’ve had strangers bring me tea at roadside stops, mechanics refuse payment for small repairs, and families invite me to share their evening meal under the stars.
Now, as I spend a little less time in the Gulf each year, I channel those experiences into helping others explore safely and meaningfully.
