  • Oman’s roads are well maintained and driving is straightforward, with clear signage and good infrastructure, find out more about driving in Oman on our dedicated facebook group “Oman Self Drive Insights”

Epic Oman at A Glance

This 14-day self-drive journey follows a carefully planned loop through northern and eastern Oman, starting and ending in Muscat.

The route balances driving days with time to explore, taking in historic cities, high mountain roads, desert landscapes, and the Indian Ocean coast. Distances are realistic, roads are good, and there is plenty of flexibility built in for detours, stops, and slower days where it makes sense.

The total planned driving distance is approximately 1,300 km, while your 4×4 rental includes a generous 3,500 km allowance — giving you the freedom to explore beyond the main route without worrying about mileage.

Navigation is straightforward. For road driving, you can use Google Maps on your phone. For mountain tracks and desert sections, we provide access to Gaia GPS Premium, pre-loaded with your off-road routes and waypoints. This works on iPhone, Android, and tablets.

More Than a Route – A Menu of Possibilities

Included with your core route, we provide a detailed, interactive map highlighting over 78 places worth seeing, including viewpoints, forts, museums, villages, wadis, and scenic detours, as well as 11 carefully chosen cafés and restaurants.

These are not must-do stops – they’re a menu, designed to give you choice and flexibility as you travel.

You can linger when something catches your eye, skip what doesn’t appeal, and shape each day around your energy, interests, and the conditions on the ground.

And because research never stands still, this map continues to grow. Marina will be back in Oman next month, exploring new routes and uncovering more places worth adding, meaning your journey benefits from constant, up-to-date local knowledge.

Want to Go Further?

Epic Oman is designed as a beautifully balanced starting point — but no two travellers are the same.

If you’d like to spend longer in the mountains, explore quieter wadis, add more off-road driving, or shape a route around specific interests, we can design a bespoke self-drive itinerary for you from the ground up.
