I’ve driven through much of Saudi Arabia, and few places have amazed me quite like this land. Every journey reveals something new – a rock formation sculpted by the wind, an almost alien-like vista shaped by fire, a hidden canyon bursting with green, or a fossil-studded hillside that tells the story of a landscape millions of years ago.
2,000 Volcanoes: A Land Shaped by Fire, Wind and Time
Yes, you read that right. Saudi Arabia is home to around two thousand volcanoes, scattered across huge black lava fields known as harrats. They’re not extinct – only dormant – and their last eruptions were relatively recent in geological terms.
Standing next to Jabal Abyad (the white volcano), looking over to Jabal Qidr, north of Medina, or gazing across the vast expanse of Harrat Khaybar feels otherworldly. The dark basalt stretches for miles, broken only by the pale cones of volcanic craters. It’s easy to imagine the landscape glowing with fire just a few thousand years ago.
These lava fields are best explored by 4×4, with a good local guide or a reliable GPS track. They’re remote, rugged, and utterly breathtaking – the kind of places that remind you how powerful and unpredictable Mother nature can be.
Rock Formations That Defy Reason: A Land Shaped by Fire, Wind and Time
Further north, around AlUla and Tabuk, the desert becomes an open-air gallery of sandstone sculptures. The most famous is Elephant Rock – or Jabal AlFil – a towering natural arch that truly looks like its namesake. But it’s only one of many, like Al Badr Arch, pictured above.
Drive a little further and you’ll find pillars, spires and balancing rocks that seem too precarious to stand. The light changes them constantly – soft gold at sunrise, deep orange at sunset. Every formation has its own character and charm.
For photographers and dreamers alike, this is a place that’s impossible to forget.

Saudi Arabia’s northwest is also home to some of the most beautiful wadis and canyons in the region. Driving through here, you’re aware of how ancient rains and constant winds have left the most miraculous landscape imaginable.
Wadi Disah, near Tabuk, is the most beautiful place on earth to me. Its towering cliffs glow red in the afternoon sun, while palm trees and small pools of water line the valley floor. It’s truly a tranquil location, although it’s one of those rare places where you can feel both peace and adventure at the same time. Birds sing, the breeze rustles through the palms, and the busy city world feels far away.
These wadis are reminders that Saudi Arabia isn’t just desert – it’s alive, full of contrasts and unexpected beauty, if you know where to look!

Of course, no story about Saudi Arabia would be complete without mentioning its deserts. The Rub Al Khali – or Empty Quarter – is the largest continuous sand desert on Earth. Its dunes rise and fall like waves, shifting with every breeze.
Driving here is humbling. The silence is deafening, the beauty overwhelming. When you camp beneath a canopy of stars, far from the nearest road, it’s easy to feel connected to something timeless.
The desert teaches patience, respect and awareness – qualities that serve travellers well, especially here.

Saudi Arabia is changing fast. New visitor sites, cultural projects and protected natural areas are opening all the time. The government’s Vision 2030 plan includes a strong focus on sustainable tourism, which means more people will soon be able to experience this geological wonderland that has for so long been denied to the adventurous traveller.
While new buildings stretch to the heavens, the magic still lies beyond the paved roads – in the wild, empty places where nature writes its own story and man has yet to conquer.
