Planning your trip to the Middle East? Here’s what you need to know before you book.
Whether you’re heading to Dubai for some winter sun, Muscat for an off-road adventure, or Riyadh for business, you’ve probably found yourself scratching your head over flight prices. One day it’s a steal, the next day it’s sky-high – and there seems to be no rhyme or reason.
The truth is, there are many factors that affect flight costs. And after 15+ years of planning trips to the Middle East, I’ve learned a few tricks and insights that I’m happy to share. So grab a cuppa, and let’s dive in.
🛫 Limited Direct Flights from Scotland
If you’re flying from Aberdeen or Inverness, you’ll soon realise direct flights to the Middle East are like hens’ teeth (actually they are non existent, due to the short runways at both of these airports).
However, Emirates fly from Glasgow (daytime) and Edinburgh, and Qatar from Edinburgh, which are all good options for Scottish customers.
If you are far away from Glasgow and Edinburgh airports and don’t want to drive there, then all other route options require a connection in London (Heathrow), Amsterdam (Schiphol), or Istanbul (IST). These stopovers can add hours to your journey – and bring a higher risk of delays or lost luggage.
Travel tip: I always pop an Apple AirTag in my suitcase. There’s a strange comfort in watching your luggage arrive in real time – or knowing exactly where it’s gone astray.
⏰ Timing is Everything
Supply and demand rule the skies. Flying midweek, taking an overnight flight, or avoiding school holidays can save you serious money. But the cheapest ticket isn’t always the best value.
A 6-hour layover in the middle of the night might look like a bargain – until you’re dozing on a hard seat or forking out for a pod hotel. Not so cheap after all.
If you’re connecting through LHR, AMS, or IST, I recommend:
- At least 2 hours in Amsterdam or Istanbul
- Minimum 3 hours in Heathrow (especially if changing terminals)
📅 Book Early, Travel Easy
Flight prices, like most travel products, are dynamic – meaning they fluctuate based on demand, time of booking, season, and even how full the plane is when you’re searching. It’s not always cheaper to book over a year in advance, and while you might occasionally snag a last-minute deal, these are few and far between (and often involve long layovers or awkward timings).
It’s also worth knowing that two people sitting side by side on the same flight may have paid very different prices. Airlines sell seats in pricing bands or “fare buckets” – once the cheapest ones are gone, the next ones cost a bit more, and so on. So if someone booked months ago during a sale, and you booked last week during a busy travel period, your fares will likely be miles apart. That’s why it really does pay to plan ahead where you can.
Many airlines release their lowest fares around 3–6 months ahead of departure, so if you can confirm leave with your employer early, it’s well worth locking it in. You’ll usually get a better choice of seats, routes, and timings too – and avoid the panic of last-minute price hikes.
Insider tip: Emirates often offers direct daytime flights from Glasgow or Newcastle to Dubai – a great option for central Scotland travellers wanting to maximise their time at their destination.
🪑 Not All Economy Seats Are Created Equal
Seat pitch, width, and comfort vary wildly between airlines – and even between planes on the same route. Some economy cabins feel fine; others feel like you’re sitting in a toddler’s high chair.
If you’re tall or just value a bit of legroom (who doesn’t?), let me help you choose the best option. I’ll also check whether you can pre-book your preferred seat.
🌐 The Best Routes – Not Just the Cheapest
From Inverness, I love flying KLM via Amsterdam – Schiphol is easy to transit, and their Economy Comfort cabin gives you a bit more space (and peace!) for around £80 more.
For trips to Oman, especially if you are in the Scottish central belt, I often suggest:
- Edinburgh → Istanbul → Muscat with Turkish Airlines. Two manageable, daytime, four-hour flights beat a short hop followed by a 7-hour haul.
If you’re flying with a codeshare partner (e.g., BA + Oman Air), your luggage should go straight through, and the airline will take care of you if delays occur. Peace of mind is worth a lot.
🏙️ Consider a Stopover
If you fancy a mini adventure en route, stopovers can be fantastic. Airlines like Emirates (Dubai), Qatar Airways (Doha), Gulf Air (Bahrain), and Saudia (Jeddah or Riyadh) often offer multi-day stopovers – sometimes with discounted or even complimentary hotel stays.
It’s a brilliant way to turn a long journey into part of the experience.
🔁 Non-Changeable vs Flexible Tickets
Fixed tickets are cheapest – but come with strict rules. Flexible tickets cost a bit more, but they give you breathing space. If you’re travelling for business or meeting friends, this flexibility can be worth its weight in gold. Need to stay a few extra days? No problem.
