Salalah! Where in the world is that?

Tucked away in the far south of Oman, Salalah is the country’s second-largest city and a true hidden gem. While it’s best known for its spectacular Khareef season, when the tail end of the Indian Monsoon sweeps in and transforms a 200-square-kilometer area into a lush green paradise, Salalah is equally enchanting from October through April. Whether you’re seeking a cool, green retreat or a sunny escape from the winter chill, Salalah offers something for every traveler.

Getting There

There are several ways to reach Salalah depending on your sense of adventure. For those who love a road trip, driving from Muscat offers a unique experience. The road through central Oman is direct but can be monotonous, with little scenery or points of interest along the 1,000 km journey. If you prefer a more scenic route, consider taking the coastal road. This route takes 2-3 days but rewards you with stunning landscapes and fascinating stops along the way. Just be aware that after Duqm, accommodations are scarce until you reach Mirbat, 80 km from Salalah.

For most visitors, flying into Salalah and renting a car is the most convenient option. The city is a perfect base for exploring the many fantastic sites just an hour or two away. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even retrace our steps along Route Four (linked below). Just make sure you have an all-wheel drive or 4×4 vehicle for the rougher tracks.

Salalah’s Unique Charm

Salalah is unlike anywhere else in the Arabian Peninsula, a medium sized seaside city with a relaxed vibe, but in common with the rest of Oman it has incredibly friendly locals. This region was once the heart of the Frankincense trade between the 8th and 16th centuries, and today, the UNESCO-listed Frankincense Trail offers a glimpse into this rich history. After exploring the trail, head to the Frankincense Souq, where you can purchase luban (the Arabic name for frankincense). If you’re lucky, a vendor might even take the time to explain the different grades and uses of this precious resin.

And here’s a fun fact: a few years ago, an Omani dairy company even sold frankincense milkshakes! It’s just one example of how Oman embraces its cultural heritage in unique ways.

Salalah’s welcoming nature extends to its people. Omanis are known for their hospitality, and as long as you dress and behave respectfully, you’ll find the locals eager to chat and share a cup of ghawa (Arabic coffee) and some dates. Unlike in many places, these gestures come with no expectation of payment—just the desire to connect and spend a little time together.

A Taste of Salalah

No visit to Salalah is complete without sampling its local produce. Bananas, particularly the tiny variety, grow in abundance in the area’s oases. As you drive along the main roads, you’ll pass countless small cabins where you can buy fresh coconut milk or a bunch of bananas. It’s hard to imagine how they sell so many, but these bananas are a staple across Oman, even making their way into supermarkets throughout the country.
